Companies shift $65 billion in marketing online

A recent report finds that companies are shifting marketing from traditional outlets to online at the tune of $65 billion this year, with much of that going to SEO.

In an interview with Forbes, Anthea Stratigos, a chief executive of media research company Outsell, says her company's prediction of the money shifting to online marketing matches the amount generally spent on television ads per year.

But while some in traditional marketing hope the recent push to online marketing is based on the recession and will bounce back, Stratigos feels that's unlikely and seems to agree with Steve Ballmer's assessment that global marketing has "reset."

"Advertising which has left the news industries, for example, is not going to come back in its same shape or form," she told Forbes. "But you can still make a case for cross-media buys and the combination of display ads plus search optimization as being effective."

A number of studies in the past year have pointed to a shift in marketing from traditional media like print and television to online venues like social networking as a way to cut costs while still reaching a growing online population.

A study earlier this month from eMarketer predicted that global spending on social networking will increase 9 percent by the end of this year.
