Shifting habits 'boosting online marketing'

Shifting habits 'boosting online marketing'Shifting media consumption habits are helping to ensure that online marketing remains popular during the recession, according to one expert.

Simon Mansell, managing director of advertising agency TBG, explained that because people are now spending 25 per cent of their time online, firms will look to take advantage of this.

Although online marketing does not currently account for a quarter of overall budgets, it is only logical that this change in habits will lead to a shift in spending, he stated.

Mr Mansell also believes that this lag between uptake of the technology and increase in online marketing is partly down to the fact that many traditional agencies have been slow to embrace new opportunities.

He said: "It has been a big theme in the UK market that it has not been efficient for network agencies to take digital money, but they are gradually improving their capabilities and are figuring out how to charge for it."

Recently, a study by MailChimp revealed that last year there was an 84 per cent increase in the number of email marketing messages which contained links to Twitter.
