Online marketing upturn prompts Google optimism

Thursday, 08 Oct 2009 14:18
Online marketing is on its way to recovery, according to Eric Schmidt, chief executive of search engine Google.

Reflecting on web marketing and the economy as a whole, the internet boss suggested that the "worst is behind us" and recovery is happening in the US and across Europe.

Mr Schmidt was commenting at a conference for reporters in New York yesterday (October 7th) and formulated his theories by gauging the success of his search engine's advertising business, although he said this may not be the most reliable economic indicator.

He also revealed that Google will be hiring more staff after scaling back its workforce in the second quarter of the year.

A recent survey conducted by digital marketing trade body the Internet Advertising Bureau - in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Advertising Research Centre - found that online marketing spend overtook TV ad expenditure in the first half of 2009.
