Even Betty Crocker is into online marketing

Phyllis Zimbler Miller - Internet Business Examiner

If you are not yet convinced that Internet business and Internet marketing are important strategies for you to know, let me tell you about the July 2nd Wall Street Journal article that caught my eye.

It’s true the headline first attracted me because I try to eat a gluten-free diet: “For General Mills, Wheat-Free Items Are Tricky to Make, Cheap to Market.”

And then what I found fascinating in Ilan Brat’s article about the Betty Crocker brand introducing gluten-free mixes for cookies, brownies and cakes was this paragraph (my boldface):

The company’s move also reflects consumer goods makers’ growing use of digital tools to market less expensively to niche segments of consumers. In recent years, companies such as Procter & Gamble Co, candy-maker Mars Inc. and others have launched new products without marketing through TV, magazines or newspapers.

In other words, thanks to cheaper methods of getting out the word about new products, the estimated target audience of a new product doesn’t need to be as huge as it used to be to warrant spending so much money to get out the word. (This marketing to defined smaller market segments is what’s called niche marketing.)

“Instead, big marketers have relied on Web sites, toll-free number and direct sales ….” the article says, and later goes on to say: “The Betty Crocker brand plans to spread the word by sponsoring online marketing …”

If companies with access to huge marketing budgets are using free or low-cost online marketing, shouldn’t you also learn how to take advantage of cyberspace to get out the word about your brand, book or business?

FYI – I again took the advice of Te-eg Bramhall (@Teeg), and Yael shot a video for the launch of the Miller Mosaic Internet Marketing Program. The video turned into two videos: the first announcing the launch of the program and the second explaining how we got to this point.
