With more people spending time on the web a growing number of companies are shifting their marketing dollars from traditional forms like print to online, according to a new report.
A new survey from Harris Interactive and LinkedIn finds that although companies still use a variety of media, print is falling to the wayside as more businesses move marketing dollars online.
The report finds that almost all respondents (92 percent) said they use some online marketing in their mix while 88 percent are still using print marketing in some capacity. But the number of people increasing their spending on these forms of marketing are going in two different directions.
Of those companies using internet marketing, 74 percent said they are using it more often than they did last year, but print saw the largest fall-off with 49 percent of print advertisers saying they will use it less often.
But while many are moving toward online marketing, the study notes that these companies should be careful.
"At least three in five consumers are very frustrated with six of the main internet advertising characteristics, and there is the potential to see a backlash forming," finds the report. "To be successful, those that advertise on the internet will need to come up with more engaging ways to connect with consumers."
Online marketing appears to be on the rise for a number of industries as a recent report from GlobalSpec found that 29 percent of industrial companies spend more than half of their marketing budgets online.
