Tourist Board streamlines online marketing strategies

BRADES, Montserrat -- As part of the Montserrat Tourist Board’s (MTB) continued efforts to encourage travelers to visit the island, the MTB has stepped up its online marketing initiatives by streamlining the destination’s tourism website, launching a fan page on the popular social networking site Facebook and creating a Twitter profile.

With monthly site visits of about a half million (500,000) hits, the MTB website continues to be the main source of tourism and general information about Montserrat. New features include the ability to access brochures and information in French, a revamped Vacation Specials section and a monthly tourism e-newsletter.

Launched in November 2008, the e-newsletter provides subscribers with key tourism news and events taking place on the island. In addition, plans are being considered to incorporate a traveler’s blog, a picture slide show and video uploads onto the website, which would showcase island hot-spots and experiences.

The MTB has also entered the realm of social networking with the launch of a Facebook fan page and Twitter profile. Friends and fans of Montserrat can visit the Island of Montserrat fan page on Facebook for the chance to experience the island virtually with current news articles, photos, videos, event notification and other related items. For those who prefer Twitter, up-to-date news and event tweets are sent to followers via the username Volcano Island.

“It is important for us to make the transition into the world of social media in order for Montserrat to be a competitor in the fast-changing travel industry,” said Ishwar Persad, Marketing Manager at the MTB. “Interactive sites such as Facebook and Twitter have grabbed the attention of travelers by providing them with a real-person perspective versus the more traditional ways of sourcing information. It is our intention to manage and be part of these real-people conversations about Montserrat.”
