Online marketing recession 'over'

The online marketing sector is now in recovery following the global economic downturn, according to Google's chief executive.

Eric Schmidt said the advertising recession is over and that his organisation has observed signs of the industry beginning to grow again over the last few months.

"The worst is behind us," he remarked. "We're clearly seeing aspects of recovery, not just in the US but also Europe."

Research published by ZenithOptimedia over the summer indicated that internet advertising will grow by ten per cent this year and will account for 15.1 per cent of global ad expenditure by 2011.

The Internet Advertising Bureau UK's head of research, Nicki Lynus, suggested at last month's Westminster Media Forum Keynote Seminar: The Future of Advertising that the upturn in spending is being driven by a rise in the number of people with high-speed web access

She said that in Britain 94 per cent of all internet connections are now broadband.
